February: Love Your Heart

Recent studies have indicated cardiovascular disease affects nearly half (48%) of the U.S. adult population. Cardiovascular disease, also known as heart disease, remains the #1 leading cause of death in the U.S.. American Heart Awareness month is celebrated in February in order to increase awareness of heart disease and motivate Americans to make heart healthy choices.

How Can I Prevent Heart Disease?

1. Eat a Healthy Diet and Include a Variety of Fruits and Vegetables. Diets consisting of green, leafy vegetables and fruits and vegetables with a large amount of vitamin C demonstrate lower rates of heart disease.

2. Exercise Daily. A total of 150 minutes a week of exercise decreases the likelihood of cardiovascular disease. Choose exercises you enjoy, find a partner, and JUST MOVE! Check out this article for how to get started: Getting Started on a Fitness Journey

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight. Additional weight places more stress on you heart and leads to heart disease. However, weight loss and a healthy lifestyle can decrease heart disease. Eating a well-balanced diet and exercising daily will help maintain a healthy weight for you. (BMI is not always the best indicator of a healthy weight. Check your body composition for the most accurate indicator of your wellness.)

4. Monitor and Regulate your Blood Pressure, Cholesterol & Blood Sugar. High cholesterol and blood sugar can cause plaque build up in your arteries leading to high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause a heart attack or stroke.Talk to your doctor about regulating your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar through diet, exercise, reducing stress and medication.

5. Don’t Smoke. Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the U.S. and is attributed to almost 1/3 of all coronary heart disease related deaths. Quitting smoking is very difficult but can ultimately add many years to your life.
